Enabling transformation: Operation Warehouse

If someone had said to me that within two short weeks we would be moving the whole company premises including all warehouse stock and internal systems whilst continuing to fulfil customer orders, I would have laughed in their face. But that’s exactly what we did, all during a global pandemic too!

Through strategic planning (down to the very finest detail), sheer determination and teamwork, we successfully navigated our way through the company’s biggest journey in history - moving to our brand new headquarters. With the increased capacity for both the office and warehouse functionality, We Are Fulfilment is now ready to embark on the next phase of the mission - transforming our working environment.

Back in October 2020, I was given a detailed schedule on how to make the new site operational and efficient for the present time, post-COVID, and also for the future of the company. The specification was clear and concise from our Group Director, Trent. In fact, I think his exact words were, “I trust you to make the right decisions”, and that was the first clear indication that I am working for a business that puts their employees first.

Having worked previously in some major logistics and distribution companies, such as Amazon and Argos, I am used to a corporate environment and following strict policies and procedures. Although sometimes necessary, that type of environment made decision-making a very lengthy process. There were always many hoops to jump through before decisions could be made and signed off for implementation, but that’s not the case with We Are Fulfilment.

Myself and Donna Copestake, Executive Assistant, were given free rein on the refit of our three storey office space, but at the same time, the warehouse was completely empty of any of the resources we needed. By empty, you’ve only got to take a look at the image below to see that we had no racking or equipment whatsoever.

So, what happened next?

With a plan in place, a lot of coffee and the odd glass of wine, we began the huge task of implementing the single biggest project the business has ever taken on. The new racking system was designed and developed offsite whilst we dismantled surplus offices which were not required for our plans (sledgehammers were used and this was a lot of fun)! The racking was soon delivered and 8 aisles were installed within 2 days. Mezzanines were drawn and purchases made. Phew! Finally, after 3 solid weeks with little sleep, we could finally relax, right? Nope! We then began working on the office renovation.

With the office space consisting of almost 5,000 square feet, we knew this was not going to be easy. The biggest challenge was to imagine how we wanted it to look and how we could put our own personal stamp on it. After knocking various walls through and forming a basic shell, we have been able to create an open plan floor space where every member of the team will be located, allowing all individuals, no matter what their role or department, to work together and enable greatness each day. We will also be installing a brand new breakout area full of games, pool tables and much more. In addition to this, we are working on a separate area on the ground floor consisting of a library and quiet zones where staff can reflect and enjoy some downtime.

I can wholeheartedly say that from the ideas that all the team have brought to the table, I know that this will be one great place to work.
